EASTERN UTAH BIRDING TRAILS
INTRODUCTION
by Keith Evans
Wasatch Audubon Society

The Eastern Utah Birding Trails map is the third and last of a series. The maps highlight the best birding spots in Utah. Utah, with a checklist of 426 bird species, has a marvelous diversity of birds due to its unique physiographic

location and its variety of habitats at various elevations. The first two maps in the series were the Great Salt Lake Birding Trails map (2001) covering the northwestern third of the state around the Great Salt Lake and the Southwest Utah Birding Trails (2004), covering the southwestern third of the state.

The Eastern Utah Birding Trails map covers the area east of a north-south line from Wyoming to Arizona connecting Hanna, Wellington, and Hanksville east to the Colorado-Utah border. The north, east, and south boundaries are the Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona state lines. The primary Utah "Latilong" cells covered are 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 22, and 23. Much of the area is inaccessible desert, however the Uinta Mountains, Book Cliffs, Interstate 70 corridor, LaSal Mountains, and the spectacular canyon lands offers many opportunities for great birding experiences.

Much of eastern Utah is undeveloped and remote. The area often experiences rapidly changing and extreme weather conditions. Use common sense by driving with a full tank of gas, a good spare tire, and shovel. For personal needs carry drinking water, food, blanket and good walking shoes. Let others know your plans as cell phone coverage is not universal. Our goal is for you to have an enjoyable and safe birding experience.

The map shown on the Eastern Utah Map & Key page is a much-reduced and modified version of the full-color Eastern Utah Birding Trails print map , that locates and describes in detail many popular birding places in eastern Utah. These locations represent only a selection of what this area has to offer and highlight the variety of habitats and birds of the area.

The birding sites are indicated by numbers on the map showing their approximate locations. Below the map are links to descriptions of the numbered areas. For all sites you will find information on expected birds, habitat, best season to visit, location (including GPS coordinates) and land ownership information. Information about restroom availability and entrance fees are provided when known.

To help you find a specific bird, below the map and site directory is a listing of Utah birds along with the numbers of the locations at which they are likely to be found.

You can purchase a full-size print copy of the Eastern Utah Birding Trails map by mail for $3.00, including postage and handling. There is an order form that you can use HERE.

If you're in Ogden, you can purchase the map at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W 12th St, Ogden.
